Christ elected to hand over the earthly responsibility of preserving and growing His legacy of eternal salvation not to powerful, political leaders but to eleven ordinary, fearful men. In a whimsical moment, this might be construed as one of the greatest mysteries of Christianity. Seriously, eternity left, not merely to survive but to thrive, under the leadership of a handful of non-powerful, low status commoners. Most humans wouldn’t vote that a winning ticket; but Jesus did. Ever wonder why??? Could Jesus have been speaking to you and me directly???
Whose responsibility, to plant, water and grow God’s church, is it??? A look at 2020 USA might indicate the ordained preacher, elite mega church and even the political arena. Don’t think that really was Jesus’s message, or intention, when He selected His chosen officials. Christ designated ordinary, timid, completely non famous human beings to awaken all mankind to eternal salvation through His suffering, death and triumphant resurrection. Indeed, those upon whom the establishment and flourishment of all Christianity (past, present and future) would be “soul”y multiplied were soles of no worldly distinction – like you and me.
So I pose a thought for each of us to ponder. Why are we distraught, and so fearful, that the coming political election is fatal because no candidate seems clearly qualified to keep Christianity alive? What if keeping God’s word breathing and growing is my job, and your job, as brothers and sisters in Christ? Maybe, Christ’s first vote, and choice, for His disciples is a reminder of this, for us, today.
One more contemplation to deliberate As we calculate the coming election, what is most vital to us Christians – electing a leader guaranteed to take over our job of sharing the Good News or defeating any figurehead steering towards the dissolution of Christianity – its values, freedom and redemptive forgiveness. In honesty, maybe this election truly isn’t about winning but, rather, what could be lost.
I don’t have any answers to offer. Probably, like most of you, I’m only filled with questions; but one thing I know for sure. Headlines, celebrities and all social media cannot chart any of our courses to deciding what is easy to claim as the lesser of two imperfections. Prayer, studying God’s word, and more prayer – each and every one of us must cling to, if “In God We Trust” is to remain our Christian, and American, freedom.
Even before the election is decided, you and I (even though we might be ordinary and fearful) must walk away from being centered in political division and become united in reaching and teaching the victory of Christ winning our redemptive eternity in heaven. The greatest ever Commander-in-Chief, Christ, speaks these words and way. “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age’.” Matthew 28: 18-20 (NIV)
One final reflection – Christ’s words are, “…surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” That unequivocally translates into His being by our side come voting day. The real question is will we lean on Him, now and then, for guidance instead of public, panic pressure. Each and every one of our sole votes will be marked as winning, if we vote from the depth of our souls. Then, no matter which candidate we punch, pencil or lever in, we all walk away under the leadership of God, not man.
